萱野茂は1923年に生まれ、北海道の小さな町、二風谷（にぶたに）で育ちました。この本で彼はアイヌ人である自分の人生と経験を楽しく説明してくれます。日常生活や仕事、遊びを通して、アイヌ語やアイヌ文化、そしてアイヌの生活がどのように受け継がれてきたかについて非常に詳細に伝えてくれます。二風谷にはアイヌ人が多かったこともあり、彼は幼少期、差別されることなく過ごせました。そのお陰で、強いアイヌのアイデンティティを形成することができました。しかし成人になり、父親が家族を養うために鮭を捕まえたために逮捕されました。この時萱野は家庭を支えるために森林で働く仕事に就き、その仕事を続けていくためにアイヌのアイディンティティを忘れるようにしました。ある時、彼はアイヌにとって重要な文化的遺産が売られていることを目にして、心が動きました。そして、アイヌの権利擁護、文化の保護を主張する為に、人類学と観光、政治に関わる活動を始めたのです。この本では、1972年に二風谷アイヌ文化博物館を設立し、1994年から1998年にかけてアイヌ人初の国会議員を務めたこと。1997年には、アイヌの聖地とされてきた土地に二風谷ダムが建設されてしまいましたが、アイヌ文化を守るため頑強に建設に反対し、差し止めの訴訟を起こし、北海道政府に訴えたことについてその動機と方法についても話しています。この本は、アイヌが現在も直面している困難や闘いについて書かれています。日本に住んでいる人はもとより、特に北海道に住んでいる人にとって必読と言えます。私自身がニュージーランドのマオリ族の先住民であるため、この本から私は特別な印象を受けました。私たち全員が先住民の歴史と文化を理解することが重要だと思いました。

Born in 1923 Shigeru Kayano first gives us a delightful account his life and experiences being Ainu and brought up in the small Hokkaido town of Nibutani. He recalls with remarkable detail his memories and experiences of how, through work and play, Ainu language, culture and lifestyle was passed down through everyday living. With the majority of the village being Ainu, he was sheltered in his early years from discrimination which helped form his strong Ainu identity. However, when Kayano’s father was arrested for catching salmon to feed his family, Kayano found himself in the postion of being his family’s main provider and managed to find a job as a forest worker. In an attempt to further that career, he temporarily forgoot about his Ainu heritage. After seeing cultural artifacts important to Ainu being sold, he then began a journey into anthropology, tourism and politics in an effort to preserve Ainu culture and fight for Ainu rights. Kayano goes on to talk about motives and methods for establishing the Nibutani Ainu Culture Museum in 1972, becoming the first Ainu to sit on the Diet of Japan from 1994 to 1998 and also taking on the Hokkaido government to stop the completion of the Nibutani dam which would eventually flood sacred Ainu land in 1997. I feel this book is compulsory reading for anyone living in Japan as it shows first-hand knowledge and inside understanding of what it is to be Ainu and the struggles Ainu have faced, and are continuing to face now. As indigenous myself, with New Zealand Maori heritage, this book struck a particular cord with me but it is important for us all to understand the history and culture of our indigenous peoples.
